We're getting more questions like: "How do we show up in Google's SGE result"? (aka their AI summary near the top of page 1 when you Google something).
So I thought this would be a good time to re-share this analysis I did of the percent overlap between product recommendations on Google's first page and ChatGPT when you ask it for product recommendations. (Yes, I know OpenAI (ChatGPT) and Google's SGE are different models, but I'll get to that...)
Here's the study link: https://lnkd.in/gEKjA6xz
Here's a summary of what I did...
I Googled 6 different software product searches:
Best time clock software Inventory management software Best crm Best heatmapping tools Best ecommerce platforms Best accounting software for small businesses
Then I asked ChatGPT for product recommendations in those same 6 categories.
I then analyzed this: how many times does every ChatGPT recommended product show up on Google's page 1 for that same query?
In short, is there was significant overlap, meaning OpenAI's model was recommending products that show up a bunch of times on the various blog posts, listicles, and software ranking guides on page 1 of Google.
Below is an example for "best CRM". Red bars are ChatGPT's products and how high the bar graph is represents how many times that product was listed in various articles on Google's page 1 results for "best CRM".
Basically ChatGPT's recommended CRMs are more or less also the ones mentioned a ton of times in the articles and listicles ranking on page 1 for "best CRM".
What does this mean for your marketing strategy? Well, you can't directly control OpenAI's model or Google's SGE model, but you we do know how those models work. They ingest a bunch of data from the internet, books, forums, etc. and they spit that back out when someone asks about that topic. These LLMs are essentially really smart regurgitators. So if you want those models to recommend your product, your goal should be to show up in the data they ingest as much as possible.
How do you do that? Put simply: marketing.
It literally circles back to just old fashioned marketing. One of those channels, a really effective one, is SEO. Show up on Google's first page. You bet Google's AI model is using it's own search engine to "ingest" data from the internet. So show up there. Rank for the product category terms of your brand.
Control what you can control.
