I never do this... but I can't be the only person getting the most bizarre sales emails lately, all working to establish a point of connection with me over where I attended University. Just today I was asked by two different reps, from different companies, who are HQ'd in different parts of the world, and neither of whom went to my university:

If I attended Ivey Formal - which they hear is an elegant and lively affair where students bond over dancing and drinks; and

If I participated in the Ivey Stock Pitch competition - which they hear is a high stakes challenge where students showcase their investment strategies.
Either something is broken in this playbook, the AI has gone rogue, or we're living in a simulation. I'm one of the few who actually read outreach emails -- I've found a lot of value over the years in understanding how people are attacking problems with technology or novel approaches. It's too bad how the attempts to be personalized have really made things so much less than that...
