Highlights
Totally honoured that my grandpa David Makofski has been included among rock stars and ramblers in ‘Now Then: A Biography of Yorkshire’ by exiled Yorkshireman, author and The Times journalist Rick Broadbent. Discover why the place that lays claim to the world’s first football club is often dubbed God’s Own County.
David’s refugee work is relayed in the chapter entitled ‘Pioneers’, alongside leader of the abolitionist movement William Wilberforce (!!) and the founder of Reclaim the Night - a feminist movement that arose in response to women being banned from going out in public following the Yorkshire Ripper murders.
The below excerpt seems extremely apt in light of recent events…
'And from all these stories, others are born. Plot lines cross, doors slide, it’s where you’re from and where you’re at. One of the firms Makofski used was Montague Burton, where he had trained. Born Meshe David Osinsky, Burton came to England alone in 1900 when only 15 to escape the anti-Jewish riots in Lithuania. He bought suits from a wholesaler and set up in Chesterfield before moving to Yorkshire and creating the Burton clothing empire. Almost 20 years earlier, a Russo-Polish Jew, Michael Marks, had preceded him by leaving his home in what is now Belarus. He began selling goods in Yorkshire villages and then set up a penny bazaar in Leeds market. Fast-forward to 1894, and he teamed up with Thomas Spencer, a book-keeper from Skipton who paid £300 to come on board. Fast-forward again to 2008, and when one of their stores opened in Tripoli, it was reportedly subjected to a virulent smear campaign by the Libyan government, which said Marks & Spencer was a Zionist entity that supported killing Palestinians. It was quite the change.'

I’m honoured to share the story of my grandpa’s work in saving European Jewish refugees from the horrors of the holocaust before WWII broke out, as told so poignantly in today’s The Telegraph magazine.
Interesting to note that back in the 1930’s when general purpose computers didn’t exist, applications for asylum seekers such as those my grandpa helped took only 2 weeks to process. Fast forward to today’s age of automation, applications take many months on average, years in some cases, leaving these people unable to work or claim benefits while they wait.
Big thanks to Naomi Greenaway for commissioning the piece, Rosa Silverman for her articulate writing and dedicated research, and all those that helped in the process and shared their stories: Holocaust Educational Trust, Mike Levy, Claire Bombardier, Chaim Rockman, Lee White, Jenny Kingsley Sarah Vanunu, Roi Mandel, MyHeritage, Rabbi Alby Chait MBE, The Wiener Holocaust Library
Proud to post this on behalf of the Leeds Jewish community and wider Yorkshire community who played an integral role in making my grandpa’s work possible by welcoming refugees into their homes and businesses during wartime.
This story’s placement was a result of my pro bono work for one of the most innovative holocaust education initiatives around Zikaron BaSalon Sharon Buenos
