A common aspect of business logic in enterprise applications is their frequent reliance on asynchronous events. An example would be a financial institution executing a series of steps as part of a “Know Your Customer” (KYC) workflow and then waiting for end users to upload an identification document before proceeding ahead with the workflow.

A challenge comes up when building reliable and scalable applications that implement such complex business flows. The process of listening to and processing asynchronous events can quickly become intricate and hard to maintain. This challenge is further compounded when you have multiple event sources and a heterogeneous & distributed footprint of services that need to seamlessly interoperate in the workflow.

This is where Conductor comes into play – it's designed to tackle these challenges with efficiency, both during development and production phases. With Orkes Conductor, the workflows you design possess the ability to listen to external events, process them, and continue execution at any point. These events can originate from various sources, including incoming webhooks – think of a third-party service triggering an Orkes Conductor webhook endpoint. Additionally, Conductor can also pause a workflow execution and wait for an event to be written to a message queue. For example, when an end user uploads a document, a message is written to a Kafka topic that Orkes Conductor is integrated with and is listening to. In fact, you can even have these incoming events configured to start brand new executions of a workflow!

The next time you are building that amazing app which needs to have these kinds of event-driven architectures (or modernizing an existing one), see for yourselves how Orkes Conductor can be a great fit.
