The Rutgers Professional Science Master's Program students this summer were in for a treat when Andrei Iancu, the Former Undersecretary and Director of the USPTO and partner at Sullivan & Cromwell LLP, gave a very candid lecture that was passionate, with a call to action on the perils of a weakening #intellectualproperty system. Andrei talked about:

  • Why an IP system is so important for innovation led companies like pharmaceuticals, to invest >$2.5 B in drug development. Without the security of the IP system there would not be any investments in life saving drugs.
  • #Trivia of IP and the fact that the word "right" is mentioned only once in the #USconstitution and that is to talk about in Article I, Section 8, Clause 8 about inventions. In his word, "The US constitution has democratized innovation"
  • The state of #artificialintelligence and the ownership of #IP rights can only reside with a human inventor or creator.
  • The fact that according to an Australian think tank, the US trails in 37 of the 44 top technological areas. How this is perhaps a wake up moment for all of us in the US innovation "ecosystem".
  • He talked about America's "Sputnik moment" and how to get more competitive in innovation on a global basis
  • He then discussed at length about the challenges with the #Interpartesreview or IPR system of patents, as well as Section 101 of the patent law which pertains to patentable subject matters. He closed with how important it is for the new generation to get involved and continue passionately towards improving our innovation system.

We would like to thank Andrei for his continued support of the Rutgers University students. Deborah Silver, Alex Turo, Milly O., Krishna Shah, Noriza Zaman
