"I know that only a fraction of my training is actually being retained. It's just a matter of which fraction that is - and how to support them get the rest."

This is something I hear regularly from Revenue Enablement folks I speak to.

They're half joking / half serious when they say that their training is only partially retained, but they're 100% correct when they say that supporting them outside of training is one of the most crucial parts of their jobs.

Retaining knowledge from training isn't just about recalling information; it's about applying knowledge effectively in the workplace.

Here’s how we can ensure training is not only delivered but also retained and applied:

  1. Interactive Learning  🤝

Switch from lecture-based training to interactive sessions that involve discussions, hands-on activities, and real-life simulations. This encourages active participation and helps cement learning.

  1. Reinforcement Strategies 🔄

Implement follow-up sessions, quizzes, and practical assignments to reinforce learning over time. Spaced repetition is key to long-term retention.

  1. Immediate Application 🛠

Encourage managers to provide opportunities for employees to apply what they’ve learned right away. Real-world application cements theoretical knowledge into practical skills.

  1. Supplementary Courses 🔙

Use your LMS or LXP to have supplementary and follow-up courses readily available for those who just underwent training. People learn in different ways, and others just need the benefit of repetition.

  1. Plan your training accordingly 📊

This might mean starting with the big takeaway and wrapping up with an interactive exercise, or whatever you deem is best for the team in question. Customized training goes a long way.

As L&D or Enablement professionals, our challenge is not only to educate but to ensure that the learning sticks and leads to measurable improvements.

How do you measure retention in your training programs?

What tools or techniques have you found most effective in ensuring learning is not just completed, but retained?

In my last post, I shared that business results need to come first to build a sustainable and scalable learning culture.

Here’s part 2: HOW?

👉 Align with business goals

Understand your company’s key objectives and identify where the talent and skills gaps are. Tailor your L&D programs to directly support these goals.

👉 Measure what matters

Step 1 allows you to know exactly how to measure the metrics and impact of your L&D initiatives, so start tracking what matters: productivity, sales, and customer satisfaction.

👉 Personalize learning paths

Use data and AI to create personalized development journeys for each employee to maximize results. Meet them where they are and guide them to where they need to be.

👉 Leverage technology

Invest in an LMS that can easily do all of the above for you, with real-time analytics, AI-powered personalized learning, and easy content integration. Make it as simple and accessible as possible. (PS. Juno Journey does this super well.)

👉 Communicate impact

No one will know the great work you’re doing unless you share it. Don’t be shy; brag about your ROI and business impact to show how L&D can contribute to the company’s success.

🎯 The result: Leadership that’s bought into the value of L&D, and completely sold on what a great job you’re doing.#LearningAndDevelopment #BusinessResults #ContinuousLearning #JunoJourney #EmployeeGrowth #Success
