Today was my 15-year anniversary at Duarte, Inc. and I’m up late... feeling reflective, I guess.

Before this job, the longest I’d spent at any company was four years. So I’ve been thinking all day today… what is it about this company that has made me want to stay?

They say people don’t quit their jobs; they quit their managers. But do they stay for their managers? I’ve had an incredible one (thank you, Patti Sanchez!) and she does a lot to remove obstacles and lift me up and be just an awesome human being to me, but I think it's more than just great management that keeps me here.

There’s a word you’ll hear from many of us Duartians about why we stay: the people. And that's absolutely not wrong. We hire A-players, but we also hire just generally awesome and caring and thoughtful people. Want to join us? https://lnkd.in/gXSZxGkZ But I still don't think that's it. Lots of companies have great people.

The next word that comes to mind is one that I’m probably more guilty than most of over-using: culture. I’m nuts about culture, and I love working on annual Duarte events, like Shop Week and SpeakUp, and few projects make me happier than when I get to infuse a little of our culture into meetings and workshops with clients. Duarte has a welcoming, encouraging, inspiring culture.

So. Management, yes. People, yes. Culture, yes. But I think Duarte delivers a little bit more still. And the only word I can think to describe it is air. Duarte has a rare quality of air.

It starts at the top. Nancy Duarte and Mark Duarte have spent over three decades building a company that protects, values, and elevates people doing creative work in the world. And to build that company into what it is today, they had to climb a lot of hills, fight a lot of dragons, and infuse our building with some pretty rare air.

And now we’re a much more distributed company, with Duartians all over the place, so I guess Nancy and Mark are instilling the whole planet with that rare air. (Yeah. You ain't seen nothing yet!)

Anyway, in that special atmosphere (that rarest of atmospheres) grows world-class managers, masterful and wholehearted people, and a soulful, uplifting culture.

And also a me. I’ve done a lot of growing here.

Thank you, Duarte.  Thinking of you all tonight. Very much looking forward to what we do next together.
