"High match rates don't really matter - here's why." If that headline caught your eye, as it did mine. Read on.

Match rates, which represent the percentage of identities that can be found between a marketers’ own data set and that of a third party – often an identity provider, but also media owners and buying platforms, have long been viewed as the single most important metric in evaluating data suppliers. In fact, over the past several years, as agencies have acquired and built out their own identity solutions (e.g., Epsilon, Merkle, Acxiom), match rates have served as a key factor during media agency reviews. I have been on the winning and losing end of those match tests. But, as the article from InfoSum below rightly points out, “match rates are the beginning of the story, not the end goal. A high match rate doesn’t matter if performance is low.”

Quality over quantity should be the priority. Marketers and their agency search advisors should be digging more deeply if they are serious about assessing the value of an agency’s identity solution. Understand the offline match with the identity provider’s offline graph, the match to their digital graph, and, very critically, the actual match with the media owner or bidding platform dataset.

Consider a live, in-market test as part of your evaluation process. Go beyond just the match exercise. Understand the true value of the data in achieving the performance desired. Without this, brands will simply miss the whole picture, thereby missing the best way to build growth.
