Edward Adelson is the John and Dorothy Wilson Professor of Vision Science at MIT, in the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences, and a member of the Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (CSAIL).145 He is a renowned neuroscientist and vision scientist who has made significant contributions to the fields of human perception, machine vision, and image processing.24

Adelson received his BA in physics and philosophy from Yale University and his PhD in experimental psychology from the University of Michigan.3 He joined MIT in 1987, initially at the Media Lab before moving to the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences in 1995.35

Key achievements and recognitions:

  1. Elected to the National Academy of Sciences in 200725
  2. Elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 201023
  3. Recipient of the 1984 Adolph Lomb Medal from the Optical Society of America3
  4. Awarded the Rank Prize in Optoelectronics in 19922
  5. Received the IEEE Computer Society's Longuet-Higgins Award in 20054

Adelson's research focuses on various aspects of vision science, including:

  • Multiscale image representation (e.g., the Laplacian pyramid)45
  • Motion perception and analysis2
  • Material perception24
  • Computational photography25

Recently, Adelson has been working on artificial touch sensing for robotics, developing a technology called GelSight, which converts touch to images and enables robots to have tactile sensitivity exceeding that of human skin.47

His LinkedIn profile confirms his position as a Professor at MIT since January 1987.6
