Shaved 3 mins off our HYROX time in 8 weeks - it wasn't easy because we definitely did worse in some stations.
More lessons to come from this in other posts, but suffice to say, it was not easy. For now, just a happy post that we did it to get a new PR!
Lu Weiyao and I both had issues with some stations we found tougher than the last time.
And, we had a very tough judges for a couple of the stations.
But, the important thing is that we pushed through the pain, and pushed through some of the physical challenges we faced. Very proud of Weiyao and I for completing yet another race.
Need to take a short break, fix my sprained arm, then start training again for the next race in June 2025!
Appreciative that my MP, Alvin Tan takes the time to respond to my sometimes inane questions, and also, my somewhat more thoughtful LinkedIn posts.
I had some questions and writings a few weeks ago around MP salaries and gerrymandering, and he suggested meeting up to discuss some of these topics. We took the opportunity to gather some members of the community for lunch to discuss these topics and more.
A few lessons gleaned from the lunch that we had together today:
1/ MP salaries - The monies are used in different ways, including buying supplies and items for the community and hosting events - I did not understand it before this, and is not fully for their upkeep. It's good to know that a lot of it is used directly for the community's benefit.
2/ Gerrymandering - Singapore is not like other countries, where people generally stay within a certain state or region, but more fluid with how we move around. Boundaries do need to be withdrawn to ensure that there is the right number of constituents per representative. Glad to understand this better now.
3/ Education - there's an ongoing debate and challenge as to whether our education system is still to intense and strict, and also, what whether the educational pressures in our modern society are formal (from the system) or informal (from parents and families). Still a lot to be done to find the balance between books and more informal ways of learning. Thanks Shulin for sharing some of these concerns.
4/ GRC system - There are reasons that we still have this system. Interesting to hear the various points of view. Still pondering on this and how it benefits the system as a whole, but good to hear the rationale behind it.
5/ Being a politician and public servant is TIRING, it is a calling and a role that one takes on to give back to the nation. The number of events that one needs to attend, to manage, along with the multiple roles is intense. It is not easy.
I'd have to say kudos to all politicians, who, whether one thinks whether they do a good job or not, face intense scrutiny and pressures every single day.
Thanks Timothy Ho, Anup Suresh, Jake Jun Kiat Tan, Shulin Lee, Zat Astha, Elly Lailee and Kelley Wong for taking the time to meet up for the makan and discussion!
