“I don’t think I’ve ever been in a room with this many successful and thriving Latinos!"
Earlier this month we gathered a group of Latino founders and ecosystem partners for a group dinner, graciously sponsored by JPMorgan. Over the course of the meal, we talked through founders’ challenges and successes in fundraising and building a capital network.
Three key takeaways:
1️⃣ Capital networks create a domino effect when it comes to a raise. Once the first check is in, warm introductions are a powerful next step to closing the round. 2️⃣ Selling into enterprises is unlike traditional B2B sales, with longer sales cycles and lack of transparency around decision-making stakeholders, having a champion and building a relationship with a contact inside the organization is key. 3️⃣ A lack of Latino role models in the entrepreneurial space makes it hard for early-stage founders to dream big, creating limiting beliefs that are reinforced by our culture and families.
This dinner is the first in a series of events and programming across Texas hosted by LatinTX. This initiative will improve connectivity for Latino founders and funders in the state, driven by myself, Alonso Mujica, Pearson Suniga and Alyssa Padron. As part of this effort, we are gathering data from Latino founders to show how much they are contributing to the growth of the state. A huge thank you to Gabriela Smith, Stephanie Lopez, and Adrián López with JPMorgan Chase & Co.'s Hispanic and Latino Wealth Initiative for their support of LatinTX and Carmelo Gordian at Shearman & Sterling LLP.
Who should we talk to in your city? We are looking for local champions to cohost the next events in San Antonio, Houston, RGV, El Paso, and Dallas. Tag them in this thread to bring a dinner to your town, and sign up for the community below.
