Elizabeth Neumann is the Chief Strategy Officer for Moonshot, a social enterprise focused on ending online harms such as violent extremism, child exploitation, and human trafficking.134 She leads Moonshot's U.S. programs, assisting government and community partners in understanding and preventing violence.13 Her LinkedIn username is jelizabethneumann.7
Neumann is a national security expert who has served in three presidential administrations.1 She was on the inaugural staff of the White House Homeland Security Council under President George W. Bush, advised the Office of the Director of National Intelligence during the Obama Administration, and served as the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) Deputy Chief of Staff and Assistant Secretary for Counterterrorism and Threat Prevention in the Trump Administration.1
Before joining Moonshot, Neumann served as the Assistant Secretary for Threat Prevention and Security Policy in the Office of Strategy, Policy, and Plans at DHS.5 In this role, she oversaw policy development and coordination for screening and vetting, terrorism prevention, countering terrorism and transnational criminal organizations, and addressing other emerging threats.5 She was also responsible for the Visa Waiver Program and the REAL ID Program.5
Neumann's homeland security work began just before the founding of DHS in 2003 when she served on the Homeland Security Council at the White House.35 As part of the White House’s Domestic Counterterrorism Directorate, she tracked terrorist threats and developed domestic prevention and mitigation strategies and programs.5
Neumann is also a National Security Contributor for ABC News and has appeared on CNN, MSNBC, PBS, NPR, 20/20, and 60 Minutes, discussing national security, terrorism, violence prevention, and politics.24 She is the author of Kingdom of Rage: The Rise of Christian Extremism and the Path Back to Peace.6 She is a board member of the National Immigration Forum and a founder and member of the Council on National Security and Immigration.4
