Hailing from Toronto, Em’s career has largely unfolded in Asia, where she established herself in Beijing starting in 2006. She relocated to Bali, Indonesia, for a sabbatical at the onset of 2020 with the purpose of writing a book, but the pandemic led her to stay and embrace new professional opportunities.
