If there is a place that combines the ideal characteristics to be the hub of agricultural fintechs in the world, that place is Brazil – and many VCs are ignoring this due to a lack of knowledge about our market. Or is it a lack of willingness to understand it?

Let me explain why our ag-fintechs deserve a closer look:

▪ Agriculture market with gigantic proportions: No big news here, Brazil is the 3rd largest exporter in the world, and agribusiness represents almost 25% of the country's GDP. One of the largest producers of grains, a leader in livestock, among other crops. Food security is the name of the game here.

▪ Inefficiencies that need to be addressed: Despite the size and productivity evolution, there are still issues holding back greater growth, especially “outside of the farm gates” with a highlight on credit, which can easily be claimed the most important input for the sector. Today, Brazilian agribusiness is primarily financed by public resources and informally by retailers who sell ag-inputs on credit.

▪ Established innovation system: Despite this, Brazilian agribusiness is technologically advanced. In the field, a global tech leader. Beyond the field, with some data and technology culture implemented. Add to that one of the most lucrative countries to invest in fintechs in the past many years.

In addition to these three points, one that is a common excuse for not investing in Brazil, the exchange rate risk, is not justifiable for ag-fintechs. Although not perfectly correlated, the cost of production, which is the basis for the ag-fintechs TAM, is very much linked to the US-dollar.

O superpoder do Brasil é o agronegócio.

3 décadas antes, as exportações eram praticamente nulas.
