It's been almost eighteen months since March 10th, 2023, the day that Silicon Valley Bank failed and SIVB went to zero overnight. I'm still very much on the road to mental, physical and financial, recovery from what transpired that week.
I had taken that Thursday and Friday, the 9th and 10th, off to attend a vintage Porsche rallye in the Texas Hill Country with my good friend Nick. He and I had just trailered my car 1,250 miles from San Diego, when the SVB death spiral had begun. My phone started to blow up after the fateful "Don't Panic" call that week and I was starting to lose sleep over the ramifications. However, Nick and I needed to depart at the crack of dawn (Central Time) as those Texas Hill Country Roads weren't going to rallye themselves. We did 600 miles of driving, with 350 other vintage Porsches, over the two days. Mercifully, there was no cell service in the remote areas of the Hill Country that we drove that morning of the 10th, so I could focus on the task at hand, which included quality time with my co-driver. As "luck" would have it, the lunch spot had WiFi. As soon as I connected, a relentless barrage of notifications flooded in: news alerts, texts, vmails, emails, DMs across all platforms, etc. It was literally, and figuratively, a difficult lunch to stomach. Through it all tho, Nick was there, lending a supportive ear, providing words of encouragement and even buying me lunch (I had lost my appetite ).
Seven months later, in October of last year, Nick was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. He was gone in November and I learned a painful lesson in perspective.
Fast forward and yesterday would have been Nick's 68th birthday. By way of bearing witness, I took "Frenchie," his '73 911S (a.k.a. THE actual Top Gun Maverick movie car), for a hop to the Top Gun House in Oceanside this morning. I like to think that Nick was smiling down on us, especially as his "funny little German car" (as he liked to call air cooled 911s) ran so beautifully, which was a fitting tribute to him and the gearhead affinity we shared. When I was in the fourth grade, at St. Vincent De Paul (in San Francisco's Cow Hollow neighborhood), the powers that be brought the 4th - 8th graders up onto the roof of the building to watch the Blue Angels practice for Fleet Week. It was the first time I'd ever seen a fighter jet in real life, much less on the MOVE. [Quick aside: Think about that for a minute... the children weren't cordoned off or tied together, there were no guardrails, etc. Just a whole mess of practically free-range grade-schoolers roaming about on the roof of a four story building, looking up the entire time, mind you. 😱 Boy Howdy! do I miss the '80s!]
The F-18s flew so close to the rooftop that not only could we HEAR the sound of freedom, but we could FEEL the 35,000+ pounds of thrust in our chests as the planes SHOOK the loose gravel under our feet. When the planes rolled ninety degrees right, we could see the pilots' helmets and practically read their names on the fuselage. As a budding gearhead, this left an indelible, lifetime, mark. I've been chasing that particular brand of euphoria ever since (countless SF Fleet Weeks, Miramar airshows, Blue Angels' practices at NAS Pensacola and NAF El Centro, etc.). As a result, you'll be able to find me at the Chicago Air & Water show this weekend. I'll be the one, staring up at the sky, slack jawed, with goosebumps rippling, etc. Hit me up if you're around and would like to connect (I'll be in town through Monday).
After that, I'll be in Salt Lake City through Thursday. Then it's off to Monterey, for more terrestrial pursuits, i.e. my 31st Monterey Car Week. Where I'll be exhibiting "Apollo," my 1987 Porsche 911 M491 / M470 coupe, at the Porsche Club of America's Werks Reunion on Friday the 16th and at Bring A Trailer's Alumni Gathering, at Laguna Seca Raceway, on Saturday the 17th. I'm slated to attend the Pebble Beach Concours on Sunday the 17th (albeit, purely as a spectator).
