I was saddened to learn last week that former President of the University of Michigan, James Duderstadt, had passed away. Jim (or The Dude as we knew him) was the President when I was an undergrad. And I was fortunate to be able to get to know him personally.
He was an engineer at heart and he loved the UM Solar Car Team. He helped the team with his network, university resources, and most importantly his time. He even flew up to see the team cross the finish line in 1993 as we won a national championship.
As team captain, I got to know him pretty well...to the point where years later he agreed to write a letter of recommendation for me for grad school. I felt that Jim cared about teaching; he cared about students; he cared about the team; and he cared about me.
Last year for our team's 30th reunion, I reached out to Jim and invited him to join virtually over Zoom. We exchanged emails and he said he would attend if he could. He was just that kind of guy.
I'll never be able to directly repay Jim for his advice and assistance...but I can pay it forward. Helping others with that same enthusiasm is what he would have wanted to see. Thanks for the motivation and inspiration!
Lastly, there's an old saying...Greek, I think...that a person dies two deaths. One when their body dies and a second the last time their name is spoken. While his first life has ended, I believe Jim has earned a very long second life. Thanks and RIP, my Dude!
