Lots of people are posting about InStyle’s announcement yesterday that the magazine is suspending print issues. Wanted to share some thoughts. I was Design Director of InStyle from 1998 through 2008 (aka from when the magazine first went from saddle-stitched to perfect-bound…through the 6…7…800-page issue days). At the time, we were selling up to 1-million copies on the newsstand and had a healthy subscriber base on top of that. Plus, by then we had started about ten international editions, other offshoot magazines, television specials, a successful website, etc.

I worked with a creative director you might know, and a creative director you might have heard of, and four other creative directors.

I had the opportunity to travel places as diverse as the Beverly Hills Four Seasons to attend the Oscars and Baraboo, WI (if you know, you know); spent much quality time in celebrities’ closets and bathrooms; and retouched, well, quite a few faces.

I once tried to figure out how many InStyle pages I’ve worked on — which frequently meant helping shape layouts other designers had created, moving stories through the layout approval process, and signing off on final art checks. I couldn’t determine the exact number, but I know it was over 15,000 pages.

It's sad to see the end of InStyle's print issues, but I will forever be grateful I was lucky enough to be part of its historical run. Some of my closest friends, and still closest work collaborators, are from that place and that time.

Most of all, it's sad to see staff being let go, and I wish them well.
