Remembering starting my role at Stately, one of the most exciting bits was getting to interact directly with the community. Being able to meet so many awesome folks at conferences who knew deeply about our tech and used it daily was insane. It really goes to show that there was a massive need in the JS community for managing state in a way that doesn't drive us insane.

That said, I noticed something that also stuck out like a bit of a sore thumb. Most of the lovely folk I'd met had been frontend developers, first and foremost. Where my backend devs at? We might not think of state management as a core concern for backend development, but it definitely is. For example, if you find yourself wrangling x,y, and z services in a specific order, you're implicitly making a state machine. Got a CRON job? Better yet, a CRON job that runs conditionally? You're making a state machine. Having a clean framework really simplifies that logic, making it easier to maintain, explain, or even handoff that sort of work.

But wait! Backend state management has its own set of concerns that are a bit unique. So I'll be selfishly sharing some examples the team and myself have whipped up, detailing how devs can work through those problems using XState on the backend.

We start with state persistence and hydration! What happens in long running processes that might need to be stalled for unknown periods of time? Well, you can't keep that silicon spinning, you silly goose. The safest way to handle this is persisting your state to a DB and rehydrating when your service is called upon again. Checkout this simple example using MongoDB and XState: https://lnkd.in/gZstHFJ2

If you got this far, thank you! You've earned a pic of my cat giving me sweet eyes. Don't let her fool you, she only does this when she wants something.
