This is a post about #AI.
My father passed last week. It was peaceful and ended a 14 month journey involving cancer, chemo, over seven ER visits, and a lot of complications.
One of the hardest things I had to do was keep various parties updated. While I speak the language, I am illiterate when it comes to Cantonese/Chinese, my mother tongue. Most of my parents’ friends and family do not speak English.
AI helped me explain my parents’ health conditions in a way that they would understand. AI helped me turn a bunch of angry bullet points into something that would give friends and family hope about my dad’s prognosis. AI helped me put together blog posts about some of the worst things I would ever write about. AI helped me craft an obit in the style of a Chinese newspaper. AI helped us plan the funeral.
With all the good and bad that we attribute to it, AI came at just the right time for my family. It tempered my voice through one of the hardest moments of my life.
I’m not a fanboy — I’m just someone who is willing to use the tools available to me when I need them.
I don’t know about AI changing the world, but it certainly made things a little easier this past year.
