I grew up in New York City, a place bustling with people from different backgrounds. Yes, there were biases—some might remember the character Archie Bunker illustrating this. Nonetheless, I forged friendships across diverse cultures. An exciting time in my education was when Brooklyn Tech welcomed its first female students, which was the year I started there.
In contrast, when I joined the military, I encountered a shock in boot camp; some recruits had never interacted with people of different races, religions, or ethnicities. However, any initial skepticism quickly disappeared. We learned to trust each other deeply, shared difficult experiences, shared fate and a common cause have a way of uniting people.
This experience shaped my approach when I started my own business. I realized that assembling a team with a variety of worldviews, anchored by shared core values, was just as important as any formal business plan.
Here's the crux of my message: Healthy businesses understand that embracing diversity, while nurturing shared values and objectives, is crucial to success. While too many politicians, both in the United States and abroad, try to divide us by ethnicity, religion, gender identity, and sexual orientation, it's business leaders who will pave the path to unity and prosperity.
