Highlights
I’ve grappled with my relationship to media consumption. I bet you have, too.
Maybe you relate to the experience I call “digital apnea”... Sometimes I’ll be at my computer, watching a basketball game on YouTube, then toggling to a New York Times article or a news app on my phone at the commercial break… and all of a sudden I realize I’ve stopped breathing.
The amount of content available can feel overwhelming. And we may question the ways our emotions are being manipulated for commercial purposes.
Yet, as a former filmmaker myself, and as an impact investor, I know that media has the power to shift our perspectives and our behaviors in positive ways.
That’s why I was excited to invite Elliot Kotek and Jared Ruga, two award-winning filmmakers, onto the Poetry of Impact Podcast.
Elliot is the Founder & CEO of The Nation of Artists, and Jared is the Founder & CEO of Vavani Productions. They both know firsthand that film is a powerful culture-building tool that amplifies voices and leverages storytelling for a cause.
Our conversation touched on the evolving role of media – from new business models driven by the streaming revolution, to how AI will impact content creation and consumption.
We dove into what “media” means at both a commercial and a philosophical level. And how content can change form without losing its depth or impact.
If you create content or care about the quality of digital content you consume, this conversation will inspire hope – and also give you some practical questions to ask yourself about what you see as the purpose and responsibility of media.

As a kid growing up in a small town, I vividly remember our local newspaper.
It would sit on our kitchen table, and throughout the day, the whole family would pick up different sections to read.
I was especially interested in the sports section. My dad and I would talk about all the team stats. (I think that’s where my interest in finance first germinated… making sense of the world through numbers.)
Now as an adult, I’m much more likely to be caught up on what’s happening thousands of miles away, on other continents, than what’s happening in the city council meetings in my own backyard.
And I’m not alone in feeling this local disconnect when it comes to news.
When I recently sat down with Cameron Nutting Williams and Zachary (Zack) Richner on the Poetry of Impact Podcast, they shared insightful data around the disappearance of local newspapers in the U.S.
Not just the stats themselves, but also the reason for the decline in local journalism – and even some eye-opening consequences that communities face when they lose their local newspapers.
But lest you think it was all doom and gloom… The majority of our conversation was about innovative solutions.
While Cameron and Zack both grew up in the newspaper business, they’re bringing fresh perspectives to the industry.
It was encouraging to hear their optimism as they shared their current initiatives supporting local journalism – through a combination of out-of-the-box business ideas, philanthropy, and political action.
