I’ve been talking a lot about the growing investor interest that Endowus has observed in #PrivateEquity, #PrivateCredit, and #HedgeFunds. This demand was echoed by the impressive turnout we saw at the recent Endowus Private Markets & Hedge Fund Symposium held in Singapore.
It is clear that clients are seeking: ▶ Hedge fund strategies with less correlation to public markets ▶ Access to private markets (equity, credit, real estate and infrastructure) ▶ Technology to make investing transparent, convenient, low cost ▶ Conflict-free, aligned advice to achieve personalisation
It is awesome to be a part of this movement, to empower investors with these tools, and I know for sure that our client’s overall portfolios will look very different from the way they looked 3, 5 or 10 years ago, and that of the prior generation.
It’s important to understand that allocating to these asset classes may not be that straightforward, or necessary. In our latest “Science of Wealth” commentary for The Business Times, Hugh Chung and I unpacked the success of Yale’s famous endowment, which cuts across multiple asset classes, and is known for its careful manager selection, diversification, and strategic eye on the future liabilities of the University.
In mirroring the Yale approach, there are some adjustments individuals should consider. While private markets may offer the possibility of higher returns through their own risk-premia, investors need to be well-informed of tail risks and liquidity constraints, and have this mapped to your specific life goals. Your allocation to the private markets and hedge funds could be a majority of your portfolio, or not have a home in it at all.
Ultimately, all investments come with risks and trade-offs, which is why specific life goals should be the bedrock that guides portfolio allocation. Read on for how to build the right asset allocation for YOU: https://lnkd.in/gmgTV2w6

Conversations on a recent ski trip with my family made me realise how we have become much more open to discussing money – a subject we used to avoid. Everyone echoed honest concerns about how to beat inflation. There is an underlying fear of investing “wrongly”, which begs the question: How should you invest your first $100,000?
Your first investment is a huge milestone and a tough one you'll struggle with, but the one rule we can rely on is the power of markets to price risk and drive asset prices. At Endowus, we encourage clients to prioritise their Core portfolios that are strategic to meet big life goals, followed by Satellite tactical portfolios to express views like China equities or technology.
Here are other tips I shared: ▻ Set aside 4-6 months of expenses for rainy days. Endowus #CashSmart offers projected yields of around 4% with daily liquidity, no penalties, and no lock-ups ▻ Invest in your near-term goals over the next 5 years – strategies like the 60/40 portfolio are more attractive than ever in today’s environment ▻ For passive income and payouts now over 7%, opt for globally diversified high-dividend stocks and higher coupon bonds with an Endowus #IncomePortfolio ▻ Let’s not forget Cash savings, CPF and SRS investments for long-term retirement needs, where you have more time to ride out volatility and invest in more aggressive 100% equities portfolios. If you can tolerate illiquidity you can also explore alternatives like private equity and hedge funds
Investing your first $1 million doesn’t look much different, and can be deployed with the same framework.
With $1 million, you can look at a wider range of strategies to represent your goals, and can afford to have your capital held in more illiquid assets to achieve unique risk-return objectives. This can be through the likes of multi-strategy, global macro, and quant hedge funds, as well as private equity, private real estate, and other asset classes.
Your money goals need to be personalised to your life. Focus on your own financial journey and build the right foundations for you and your loved ones.
