STARTUP AUTOBAHN powered by Plug and Play EXPO2024 is a wrap!  It was great to share a few thoughts on Collaborative Innovation along the Automotive Value Chain, together with Madeline Schmeiser (Plug And Play), Martin Vollmer (Forvia Hella), and Matthias Feulner (NXP). My key take-away:

  1. Innovation requires collaboration: it is a given. In such a fast evolving tech landscape and complex world, no company can solve all their challenges just on their own.
  2. Innovation requires time and space. OEMs need to ring-fence resources to let their teams explore creative solutions to engineering, manufacturing and customers’ pain points. Be deliberate about your innovation efforts.
  3. Innovation requires optionality. It is undoubtedly a must to innovate by collaborating with your Tier 1 and Tier 2. However, adding startups into the mix can limit your dependency to their existing tech roadmaps. Trading the comfort of an existing relationship for the laser-focus dedication of a startup can bring unexpected capabilities and extra speed to your tech roadmap!
  4. Innovating with startups is tough. Mobilize your own tech specialists so that they can mentor the startup and guide their engineering work. Implementing Luminar Technologies’ lidar in our premium #EX90 SUV is the result of a 6-year journey, requiring radical collaboration among the teams. But thankfully, it should make the roads safer. ;-)
  5. Bringing patient capital to the startups is a great way to maintain the alignment of interest over time, across the highs and the lows of the collaboration. This is one of the value-add brought by Volvo Cars Tech Fund to their portfolio companies.
