A lot of AI tools are so early in their development that they aren’t yet practical to use.

I want to give a shoutout to one tool that I used recently and found IS ready for primetime.

(And no, this isn’t sponsored. I heard about this tool from Siqi Chen at the Operators Guild Summit and decided to give it a try.)

Gamma is an alternative to PowerPoint/Google Slides that created a beautiful deck for my talk on AI and mental health earlier this summer.

After feeding it the outline of my talk, Gamma generated 10 slides of decent content. I made edits, added references, and built additional slides.

I’ll take editing a draft to creating one from scratch any day.

The thing I appreciated most was that formatting was a breeze. Whether pasting text, adding a slide, or adjusting the layout, it was easy and looked beautiful with minimal effort on my part. I also used the AI features to generate unique images that were a good fit with my content.

And by the way, it was free to use (with an option to upgrade for $10-$20/month depending on selected features if you run out of AI credits).

Gamma = Happy Hannah

I find conferences both exhausting and energizing – anyone else?

The last 3 days I attended the American Psychological Association conference, conveniently held in my beautiful city of Seattle.

It was nonstop but also lovely to see old colleagues/connections, and I left with my mind turning over things I learned and new ideas that were sparked.

One of my favorite sessions was “Demystifying AI with Psychological Science” facilitated by Dr. Jessica Jackson, with presentations and discussion between Adrian Aguilera, Tara Behrend, Margie Morris, Smriti Joshi, and Ericka Rovira.

Dr. Rovira emphasized something I’ve been thinking about as well: mental health leaders have an important role to play in helping people sort through what is real versus AI-generated content -- including AI "hallucinations," i.e. false, misleading, or illogical information generated by AI that would seem credible if you're not an expert in that specific area.

Therapists have always played a role in helping people sort through their perception of reality, and this becomes all the more important with genAI.

In general, I echo Kay Nikiforova that clinician attitudes toward technology have become more open and curious – with appropriate wariness and caution about generative AI solutions. On the flip side, attitudes toward mental health tech companies were less positive, with commentary across sessions on the ways that clinicians are being asked to do more for less pay.

Two hot topics that I thought were under-represented at the conference: I expected to see more sessions focused on psychedelics and clinicians providing education via social media platforms.

For other folks who attended – what were your takeaways? What would you want to see more of next year?
