That '80's bad boy 😎 on the left thought he was going to change the world with his saxophone. 🎷 I remember it well...the tortured conversation with my parents soon after graduation from university, when I carefully explained my decision to forgo my political science training to become a rock ‘n’ roll saxophone player. (Insert empathy for my parents here).
I appreciated the ensuing silence. It was better than the words I anticipated.
Okay, so it didn’t quite work out…well, it almost did. But that’s another story. In fact, it became the long-unspoken gap in my professional resume—that inexplicable year after college. For years I kept the story under wraps. My one failure I should never speak of. That’s because my old-game playbook said failing was bad. Here’s a page out of the new playbook: lessons in defeat can be more valuable than the lessons born from success. That is, unless you tuck them away—out of sight and out of mind.
You may have heard the expression, “Show me a good loser and I will show you a loser." That’s wrong! It wasn’t until many years later, working side-by-side with some of the world’s leading changemakers, I realized that by ignoring this one obscure defeat, I missed some of the most important lessons of my life. All that was needed was a mindset shift that could have framed my failure as a success. That guy on the right? He’s delivered keynotes from the biggest stages in the world. He is the author of #ChangemakerPlaybook and #CampaignInc. He was the 2008 COO of Barack Obama’s campaign organization, and he was White House Deputy Assistant to the President.
And this was not despite his failure, but largely because of it! Let’s flip the frame and look at how he richly benefited:
🎶 At 21, he took a stand for his passion against the conventional thinking at the time.
🎶 Forming bands and landing gigs was the most entrepreneurial thing he'd done to that point.
🎶 He learned to be a performer in front of a crowd, and that later served him well on the big speaking stages.
🎶 He learned to take a bet on himself—and he came to realize over the years that it's a bet he's never lost, even if the payoff wasn’t always what he'd expected.
There were more lessons…learning resilience, flexing that “changemaker” muscle at a young age, and being a creative.
These are all things that serve me today in a powerful way. That year of failure was the most important educational experience of my life! What’s the frame you need to flip? Post it below and let’s celebrate it. 🙌🏽
