Highlights
I've received a cold email asking for a job.
We don't have any advertised positions, but this happens often. These applications are usually pretty bad, clearly written as a generic mass email (sometimes with dozens of companies CCd), but this one seems particularly out of touch.
The candidate leads with: "... I work for <x> but I wish to move on for a plethora of different reasons related to diver safety, work conditions and pay".
To me, that's just a big red flag and screams a problem employee.
Not that all he wrote couldn't be true (i.e. the conditions are bad, they don't practice safety well or the pay is low), but in my mind is the equivalent of talking trash about your current employer and all I see is an entitled person who will likely be unhappy with the working conditions or pay, or any of our practices, if we employ them.
If I was applying for a position, I'd emphasise why I'm excited to work at that particular company, and what I can offer. I can always answer why I want to change jobs if asked.
I'm curious if it's just me being defensive, or would you react the same, as someone hiring people?
This is not really new, in fact I can't believe it's been over a year, but I finally got to updating my profile :)
In February 2022 Ivana Galic and I bought Coral Sea Dreaming, a dive, snorkel & sail liveaboard in Cairns. The goal was more adventure, following a dream and spending more time underwater :)
It's been an intense, fascinating journey so far with a steep learning curve and so many things happening - good and bad, fun and slog, happy and sad. Most of all, it's been surprising, unexpected. It's unbelievable how much has fit into a year!
