Several of my friends, family, and former colleagues comment that in no way, shape, or form am I actually retired–because I seem to be awfully busy.
But I DO actually view myself as retired and thought I would take a few moments to tell you why.
I am now almost 2 years into my personal journey with Jackie 3.0/Post CMO. The ‘retired’ word tends to cause confusion within my orbit, since I do have more irons in the fire than ever before.
Here is a quick summary of why I believe I am retired:
My current income pays about 30% of our expenses. We pull the rest from our investments I have to buy my own health insurance off the marketplace (which is expensive and terrible) I get to choose what I spend my time and energy on–I have a 10 point ‘Success list’ that guides me I handle my own admin tasks (least favorite) I get to visit my Granddaughter every 3 months in NH We take off in our RV around the PNW Many a morning I can drink my coffee and read the newspaper in bed
Some days I wonder if I could do a better job scaling my positive impact and help for others–but for now I am enjoying the mix of corporate, non-profits, start-ups, exec coaching, traveling, being with friends and family, exercising, and cooking. Perhaps the best feeling is better supporting my blind husband on a day to day basis–we are pretty much inseparable at this point.
My advice is to retire as soon as you can afford to–because the longer we spend of our lives doing exactly what we want, the better. Sit down with your financial advisor and significant other and start to craft a plan–how much $$ is enough? How DO you want to spend your time? What is your desired lifestyle? What is a reasonable timeframe to aim for? I personally feel like our healthcare options if you retire before 65 is the primary potential downside. Our mistake was not specifically planning for increased healthcare costs.
Bottom line--I hope you find the same freedom and fulfillment in retirement that we have!
