It’s not enough that social media platforms want to own your personal data, now they also want to own your opinions, ideas and expertise.

LinkedIn is now prompting its users to answer industry specific questions that relate to their area of expertise. They use these answers to train their own Ai learning models so they can sell your expertise for a profit.

And in exchange, they’ll gladly give you…nothing*

This is just a friendly reminder that generative Ai in its current state, while very shiny and impressive, is mostly just big corporations mining other peoples work, claiming it as their own and charging people to access it or leverage it. All while doing it under the camouflage of altruism, or in Linkedin’s specific case “helping to unlock community knowledge”.

*I will offer up what little expertise I have at no cost to anyone that would like to pursue building the next generation of social media platforms where the users are the sole owners of their wisdom, personal information and data and are not treated as a commodity.

It’s a little naive and a bit dangerous for creatives to think AI will not completely disrupt our industry.

Bear in mind, technology evolves at an exponential rate. Generative AI today, while remarkably impressive, will be considered crude in comparison to the AI of the next 3 to 5 years.

There is a significant portion of the “creative” industry full of monotonous, uninspired work and it’s likely that this tier of work will be the first to be replaced by generative AI. AI will create photographs, write stories, record VO’s, craft user interfaces, produce film and video, build Ads and more. Most notably and contrary to some industry opinions, it won’t always need great creative direction to do so. My assumption is that a good deal of people will be satisfied with generative AI’s early outputs even if it doesn’t meet our own creative standards. Think what Canva has done to upend template designing but on steroids. What this means is less opportunities for creatives and more competition from cheaper alternatives for better or worse.

Personally I would aim for a strategy of learning to position yourself and your unique human experience as a competitive advantage to producing exceptional creative work. Try to break the rules in a way that only you can in order to achieve the results you want. Familiarize yourself with new tools in order to incorporate them in your work, or don’t, but at least have a perspective on the changing landscape. Lastly, Surround yourself with people that value your unique perspective, whatever that perspective may be - as long as it’s unique to you. Creativity isn’t going away and it won’t be monopolized by bots but the business of monetizing creativity is about to shift dramatically.
