Hype & excitement is not product-market fit...
Justin Barad, MD founder of Osso VR just gave a great breakdown to Jessica Hagen at MobiHealthNews with key observations for startups:
-
It is very easy to confuse initial excitement and hype with "We figured it out. Let's go full force"
-
That's just the beginning of learning from users, refining use cases, and accelerating product improvements.
-
Initial success leads to "Let's get bigger so we can capitalize more on the success"
-
That's the moment to take a breath and refine the foundation - whoever has the strongest foundation will come out on top (instead of continuing to chase new things)
-
Changing the foundation later is much harder to do
As a self-confessed scale geek, this is crazy insightful

Could Jack Welch achieve the same level of success today?
Probably not.
At least that's the conclusion of Ron Thomas at a recent Human Capital Institute session.
According to a recent study of senior executives by Green Peak Partners and Cornell University -
"Conventional wisdom is wrong — and that leaders who possess strong soft skills perform better at driving hard results”
Moreover:
✅ Soft skills will be the key leadership driver
✅ Interpersonal strength will be a key competency
✅ Self-awareness is an important trait of modern leaders
On the flip side:
❌ "Bullying" traits suggest incompetence and lack of strategic intellect
❌ Low Interpersonal Skills = low business performance
❌ Leadership searches tend to downplay self-awareness as a key success factor
Never too soon to look at how your company is building up the next generation of leaders, and what traits are being emphasized.
