Holding a piece of history! An incredible honor for me to take care of this patient who had a total femur replacement for an osteosarcoma 50 years ago by my mentor and the pioneer of limb salvage for osteosarcomas Dr Ralph Marcove! She was in pain and had great difficulty walking. The tibia subsided and was loose. The prosthesis also bent at some point in time. She underwent removal and replacement with a new modular GMRS. An offset cone was placed in the tibia to compensate for bone loss. Joint height restored. The post op X-rays taken with knee slightly flexed in PACU. Interestingly in the 1970s patients with osteosarcoma received a much more lengthy and intensive protocol that lasted almost 18 months. This patient developed cardiomyopathy from the doxorubicin and required a heart transplant. Despite all she has been through she is always smiling even with all the pain she has been experiencing. She was part of the first cohorts published by Marcove et al in the 1970s when he detailed the first cohort of patients undergoing limb salvage surgery for distal femur osteosarcoma. In those days the entire femur was removed. #Osteosarcoma #orthopediconcology #orthopedics #sarcoma #orthopedicresident #orthopedicresidency #expert #health #medicine #pediatriconcology #familymedicine #pediatrics #limbsalvage #wellness #physique #bonecancer #jointreplacement #stryker #femurreplacement #kneereplacement #hipreplacement
