New York State to ban social media for kids under 18. South Australia to ban social media for kids under 14. Australian government may go a step further and make the minimum age 16, nationally. Now the US surgeon general is suggesting platforms should add a warning label saying that “social media is associated with significant mental health harms for adolescents.”

Excited for my daughter that there will be overt awareness and action about this prior to the age she would use it; there'll finally be public understanding and acceptance that it's bad news for your brain. For numerous years there has been quantifiable evidence that there's not just correlation, but causation, between mental health issues and social media. Unfortunately, this is especially the case for young girls. Capitalism + attentional scaffolds + algorithmic feeds = an addictive, reality distortion disaster.

This progress is welcome. 👏
