Weekend Musings on AI—Scientific American is the oldest magazine (175+ years) in the USA. I have been reading it for a long time. As a kid growing up in India, it exposed me to the wide world of science and technology. The editors and writers do an exceptional job of explaining the value of science and technology advances in the human context.
I highly recommend the April 2024 issue focused on AI. A fascinating set of articles that include - QuranGPT, Decoding burnt centuries-old documents, AI competing in International Math Olympiads and Modeling of AI on human brains. They showcase the power and limitations of current AI capabilities and what AI researchers are working on.
As a high school student in an Indian Army school in Delhi, I surprisingly won the silver medal in the International Math Olympiad Competition. AI models, along with some specialized algorithms (non-AI), are now able to solve the geometry section of the Competition at the gold medal layer. However, they cannot do the non-geometry sections (yet).
The article "Truly Intelligent Machine" is a must-read. Researchers are modeling AI on human brains (40+-year-old journey) and coming up with interesting theoretical models and working prototypes. Godfathers of AI - Yoshua Bengio is doing interesting work on GWT (global workspace theory). Copying from the article - Consciousness is to the brain what a staff meeting is to a company: a place where modules of the brain can share information and ask for help. The human brain is "seen" as a mixture of experts.
chatGPT and Mistral have approximately 16 different neural networks working together trying to create "mixture of experts" The article has a fascinating explanation of how Google Translate works. Think of all langauage looking the same world and coming with different words for the same thing. Each language has a word cloud. These word clouds are "aligned" till they match and voila Google can translate between languages. An example of Global Workspace concept.
The second Godfather of AI (Yang LeCun) is my favorite "translator of AI". He is advising abandoning of generative models and going back to older AI models that I used in my career at TIBCO.- Discriminative Neural Networks. Train a model to recognize a cat to recognize by a cat by feeding it images of a cat. His point is that it is similar to human brain work. While driving, we ignore all the details that matter and discriminate to what is important.
It is fascinating to see how AI is combining math, neuroscience, psychology, software, and hardware in our quest for AGI - the human brain is still the best thinking machine we have. AI will take a long time to get there.
My advice - Read Scientific American and apply/use AI carefully. As we apply AI to enterprises, use AI strengths with traditional software. Don't force AI to do things it can't do. Don't make it design a bridge.
