The key to living a big life is to not have all the answers.

When we’re young, most of us are taught that the world is certain. We’re asked to study for the test. To know the correct answers.

But of course we grow up and quickly realize that the world is actually quite uncertain. That there are very few correct answers. That what works for one person might not work for another.

If you’re interested in living a big life, learn how to ask and live big questions. Questions in which the answers unfold over time and are specific to you.

I reflected on this idea today and came up with a long list. A few of my questions include:

“Who are my people?” “How can I make a good living doing what I love?” ”How can I connect to those I’m most drawn to?”

It can be empowering and scary to ask such big questions and settle into a place of not knowing. But it just might make life more meaningful.

Slowing down reaps enormous benefits.

In a Saturday morning yoga class, my teacher invited us to select an intention for the day. The words "slow down" entered my mind.

For the rest of the day and through the weekend, this intention manifested in walking more slowly than usual. Much more slowly. At times it was painful. I'd watch myself begin to speed up to make a crosswalk signal or catch an incoming subway train. Habits I've had for a long time.

By Saturday afternoon, I noticed that my mind was still 10% more than it is on a typical day. A noticeable difference.

I felt calmer. More in my body. More at ease.

This experience showed me how often I rush through life. Shifting from task to appointment to task. Moving at my usual pace makes me feel stressed and anxious.

I'll take ease and grace over stress and anxiety.
