Wow! The market saw disruptions and volatility this week. I’m focused on the evolving global economy. Recent discussions with Kip Prootcal, Stability AI, and our team at Anomaly suggest we may be shifting from a knowledge economy to a relationship economy.

In this new economy, human skills will be crucial: creative thinkers, educators, ethicists, tinkerers, collaborators, communicators, caretakers, and visionaries. These skills, which technology can't ever really replace, are becoming more and more future-positive.

Minouche Shafik, President of Columbia University, stated: “In the past, jobs were about muscles. Now they’re about brains, but in the future, they’ll be about the heart.” This is awesome and so undervalued.

Peter Thiel sees this shift from hard to soft skills as “a long overdue rebalancing of our society.”

Hard skills quickly become outdated due to rapid technological change, but soft skills remain timeless. According to a LinkedIn Global Talent Trends report, 92% of talent professionals say soft skills are as important as or more important than hard skills.

What we are learning at Anomaly is that technology highlights the need for people skills like problem-solving, empathy, and active listening for career and company success. My view is that companies that value these skills will lead in this new era.

Kevin Roose, tech columnist for The New York Times, made this point: "In the age of AI, the most human humans, the most human companies, and the most human communities will not only survive but thrive."

Integrity, always a personal core principle, is becoming an even greater value. A study in the Journal of Management Inquiry said that integrity is a top skill in the AI age.

Oral communication remains vital for expressing compassion, inspiration, creativity, and vision. As AI tools like ChatGPT become more integrated into the workplace, job descriptions mentioning these tools have tripled in the past year.

In our industry, creative problem solvers, empathy-based communications experts, people who understand how to convey feelings and ideas, poets, and designers are going to be, in my view, in very high demand.

The future is bright for those who develop these uniquely human skills. So here’s to liberal arts, human connection, and empathy!
