As a parent who struggles with raising a neurodivergent child I'd like to say this. I've learned a lot about life and humans from her. I've learned to be more aware of the fact that many have invisible disabilities and I'm still learning to be more patient and understanding with all humans because we all have our own struggles and stories. It's not easy, life is not easy but I want this to be a reminder to both myself and those reading this that there are a lot of people out there who may or may have not been diagnosed as neurodivergent and those "on the spectrum" can have a mix of many different types of neurological disabilities that make them who they are. My dad suffers from borderline functioning bi-polar disorder. You might meet him some day and never know this. He also suffers from PTSD from when my mother died while giving birth to me and all my life he's reminded me about that moment and how much it hurt him. This was very tough for me to live with as a kid but I managed to stick with my dreams and pull through it all. I've never thought of myself as "entitled". Now in the biz 20+ years as independent music company (S Corp) living comfortably doing what I love. I've been working as a professional in the industry since 1998 and entered into sync licensing and production music in 2009, even sold and exited one of my companies in 2008. Coming up from nothing, and building a career and fulfilling your dreams in a time when there was no internet or social media is not a walk in the park let me tell ya. Honestly it still isn't. But there were several people in my life who gave me a chance without even knowing who I was and for that I am grateful. But I never took handouts and didn't have many friends helping me all in all. We all have our own struggles and stories. With that said I wanted to share a comment someone left on my status the other day. The back story is they messaged me a day before that saying something along the lines of "Hello, are you looking for any beats?". As most of you know I like to help people when and if I can but because of my schedule and the fact that underneath as a parent we're almost always tired I did not make it a priority to respond to this message. I get hundreds of these types of messages all the time. Long story short less than 24 hours later this individual saw my status and left an arrogant and insulting comment. This is no way to properly "network" with any industry professionals. My advice to all starting out is to remember most of us know each other. We've spent half or more of our lives networking (and I'm no spring chicken lol) and probably know almost everyone or at least in some way we are connected with everyone who you also may want to meet to help further your career. Tread lightly, be respectful, and patient with others. Don't forget we're all in this together and if you "make it" you will probably end up working with someone you may have insulted at some point so best to just not go there.
