Allegiant Stadium might be hosting Morgan Wallen tomorrow but the stadium’s hottest ticket was Greylock’s security leader x portfolio Black Hat event.

Great to see so much conversation around the future of security threats and solutions between 100+ CISOs and executives with our companies across stages.

Today, AI agents are experimental, but they’ll soon be an integral part of enterprise workforces. I’m interested in leveraging AI architectures across domains, but particularly in constrained areas with high-frequency, high-value workflows.

One such area is data engineering and analysis. Data engineers are in short supply relative to the massive volume of data created every day. Data engineers ability to tackle higher-value, strategic work is impaired by more rote, repetitive work.

AI agents can help narrow that gap, and provides a great entry point for startups. With automation tools as your co-worker, everything can just happen faster: data pipeline generation, transformation, orchestration, and analytical data models. Given the demand for data engineering, there is plenty of opportunity for startups to work on tools to extend their capabilities.

AI agents also have a valuable role to play to manage our growing security needs, including in identity governance and administration workflows. I would love to see AI agents that could extend identity provisioning, governance, access reviews, and threat response capabilities. AI has greatly expanded the risk surface area, and we need a new approach.

Moving onto the apps: we need a way to dynamically test AI apps for security vulnerabilities before they are even deployed. Now that AI applications are compound (comprising multiple models, reasoning, memory, tools, pipelines, and connections to external systems within an environment), the ability to monitor for aberrant behavior while in production is the only way to meet security and compliance goals. Governance and secure control of agents will be critical to their widespread adoption.

If you are a founder (or prospective founder) interested in these areas, please get in touch with me.
