Associate Professor of Physics at UC San Diego
Javier Duarte is an Associate Professor of Physics at the University of California San Diego (UC San Diego) and a member of the CMS experiment at the CERN Large Hadron Collider.13 His research focuses on developing new artificial intelligence (AI) techniques for high-energy particle collisions to better measure the properties and interactions of elementary particles, like the Higgs boson, and search for new physics.13
Career and Education
Duarte's academic journey includes:
- Bachelor of Science in Physics and Mathematics from MIT (2006-2010)1
- Ph.D. in Physics from Caltech (2011-2016)1
- Lederman postdoctoral fellow at Fermilab (2016-2019)1
- Assistant Professor of Physics at UC San Diego (2019-2023)1
- Associate Professor of Physics at UC San Diego (July 2023-Present)13
Research and Achievements
Duarte leads a research group that focuses on:
- Hardware-accelerated machine learning for trigger and computing
- Geometric deep learning for particle physics
- LHC data analyses for Higgs and exotic new physics1
He has received several prestigious awards, including:
- Sloan Research Fellowship (2023)
- RCSA Cottrell Scholar Award (2023)
- DOE Early Career Award (2020)
- APS Henry Primakoff Award for Early-Career Particle Physics13
Duarte is also a co-PI of the NSF HDR Institute for Accelerated AI Algorithms for Data-Driven Discovery.3
Commitment to Inclusive Excellence
Duarte has been recognized for his efforts in promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion in physics:
- Received UC San Diego's Inclusive Excellence Award for his work on making graduate admissions more equitable2
- Developed a more holistic admissions rubric for graduate students, de-emphasizing GPA and standardized tests2
- Advocates for considering non-cognitive competencies in evaluating applicants2
Duarte is committed to creating an antiracist, inclusive, and supportive workspace in his lab.3
Highlights
I've been promoted to Associate Professor with tenure in the Department of Physics at UC San Diego (retroactively effective July 1, 2023). The path to get here wasn’t easy for me (though it may seem that way from the outside), but I could always count on the support of my partner, family, friends, mentors, collaborators, students, and, last but not least, our dogs Scully and Mulder. I am extremely grateful to all of them. Here are just some of them: https://lnkd.in/gc-GsDVG
