I always try and leave every job on a high and that’s definitely the case with Saga. The newsletter I worked on has been nominated for not one, but TWO awards: 🏆 Best Newsletter at the BSME Awards & PPA Awards.

With open rates of 50-63% and CTRs up to 10%, this newsletter proves what I've always believed: the older generation is fully embracing digital. Create the right product, and they'll be engaged!

A huge shoutout to the newsletter OGs, Anna-Louise Dearden and Gareth Beavis, for laying the groundwork. And of course, my incredible (now, sadly, ex!) colleague phillipa cherryson, who captained this newsletter with her unmatched knack for understanding the Saga customer. I've been proud to be her co-pilot.

What I'll miss most is the engagement. Our users emailed about their old gadgets, entered competitions in their droves, and weren't shy to give feedback. It's been a pleasure connecting with them.

We're up against some big names like Which!, Stylist, and BBC Good Food, but the nomination itself is a huge win! 🤞

Last March, I took a leap and left freelance life behind for a full-time adventure as Senior Editor at Saga, thanks to John McCann who took a chance on me. It was brilliant! I thrived working as part of a team, creating content specifically for an often-overlooked online audience.

Together, we built a website from scratch, launched one of the most engaged newsletters I've ever seen (now shortlisted for two awards – how exciting!), and even discovered our audience's surprising love for air fryers (who knew?). It was a whirlwind – I learned a ton (including the surprising answer to whether you can cook pancakes in an air fryer), and made lifelong friends (looking at you, phillipa cherryson!).

But, as the parent of an autistic teenager, life isn't always linear. This week, I said goodbye to the regular salary and embraced the flexibility of freelancing once more. While my son isn't little anymore, he still needs a lot of support navigating a world that can be challenging for the neurodiverse. September brings the start of Y10 and those crucial GCSE years, so it's time to give him my all.

Freelancing is the key to my flexibility, and I'm back in action! Need engaging content (anything!), social media magic, or website editing? You know where to find me – the (now official) air fryer expert at your service!
