Silicon Valley to Miami? A Latam startup founder tells his story.

Three years ago, I made the move from Silicon Valley to the Miami startup ecosystem. When I left, I wrote an article about whether startups still needed to be in the Bay Area. My conclusion was that once upon a time they did, but that the world had changed. It was called “Will the last person leaving Silicon Valley please turn out the lights”. There is a link to that article in the comments below.

The reactions I got personally leaving 3 years ago ranged from “Are you retiring?” to “Going to live the party life?”. I wasn’t. I co-founded Base Miami, a market entry accelerator, here in South Florida and became a part of local startup mentor networks.

Suffice it to say, a lot has happened since 2018. Miami has become “a thing”. More Silicon Valley people have come here. VC funds, PE firms, startups; and Miami has been welcoming. Miami mayor, Mario Suarez, famously asked new entrants to Miami “How can I help?”.

Today the question I raised 3 years ago is more important than ever: “If you are an international startup coming to the US, does your startup NEED to be in Silicon Valley. Is it reasonable to pay the PREMIUM?”

I would like to share the thoughts of a Latam entrepreneur who made this move. His name is Matias Rivera Larrain, Co-Founder & CEO at Fz Sports. He joined a Base Miami panel recently and the discussion was illuminating and insightful.

Hope you enjoy it! Please let us know what you think.
