Highlights
🚀 Thrilled to share insights from yesterday's impactful presentations at the Digital Twins Symposium at University of Rhode Island (thank you to Douglas Hales!), specifically an amazing presentation by Jeremy Muldavin from Aerocyonics, Inc.. His talk on the strategic implications of non-domestic chip manufacturing highlighted crucial points that resonate deeply with current global technology, cybersecurity, and supply chain challenges.
🔍 Jeremy underscored the significant risks involved with the majority of COTS (commercial off-the-shelf) electronics, which are predominantly fabricated overseas. This situation presents not just a defense vulnerability but extends its tentacles into national security, automotive, banking, and our critical infrastructures. The control and potential tampering by foreign entities can't overlooked.
💡 One of the solutions he proposed involves the integration of traceability and a robust root of trust in the manufacturing processes of these critical components. By implementing traceability, we can ensure every chip's journey is immutably authenticated, providing transparency and security from the foundry to the field. Furthermore, establishing a ROT (root of trust) secures our electronics at the foundational level—only permitting verified software and firmware operations, thereby barricading against unauthorized intrusions and manipulations.
💥 With the vast majority of fabrication primarily overseas (and more specifically sourced from a "contested geography"), Jeremy's emphasis on the need for a rejuvenated domestic supply chain that incorporates advanced digital twins technology, traceability, and ROT is a clear call for bolstering our nation's long-term economic growth and technological leadership.
🌐 As we navigate these complex issues, it's clear that integrating these sophisticated technologies into our manufacturing processes isn't just beneficial—it's imperative for our national security and economic resilience.
