After 7 fulfilling years as the Executive Director of SSV, I've decided to explore new horizons. It has been rewarding to lead SSV as we evolved into a mission-driven, project-based organization conducting tangible projects that have a positive impact on the communities we serve.

Climate change is the defining issue of our day, and I’m proud of the work SSV has accomplished in collaboration with our members, partners, funders and communities. Working on our key issues, including water reuse, air quality and community engagement, is a multi-stakeholder undertaking. Highlights of our work together include: • Winning the largest grant in SSV’s 24-year history from the California Air Resources Board for the Youth Air Quality Advocates project, which educates students in the East Side Union High School district on the science of air pollution • Amplifying SSV events by collaborating with tech companies such as Google, Microsoft and Intuit, producing SSV’s biggest series of water events in the organization’s history, and bringing together over 200 leaders and decision-makers • Successfully completing the SmartTA Traffic Analytics project – an undertaking ahead of its time and still relevant today – with funding from an international innovation agency and the Bay Area Air Quality Management District, which correlated traffic and air quality along University Avenue in the City of East Palo Alto • Forming a powerful coalition for the Intelligent Transit Signal Priority pilot project, with funding from C/CAG and technology developed by LYT, which lowered emissions and transit time by extending green light timing to select SamTrans buses in the City of East Palo Alto  • Developed BackpAQ, a mobile air-quality sensor that clips to students’ backpacks, currently being used in the Youth Air Quality Advocates project, and co-located with Bay Area Air Quality Management District’s regulatory sensor in San Jose Educating over 1,000 students about air pollution through the Youth Air Quality Advocates project; students are learning to analyze, understand and act on the data they are collecting

Over these past seven years, the sustainability world has been transformed. Niche topics that we delved into at SSV, such as water efficiency and induction cooking, and industry terms such as AQI and carbon sequestration, are now widely discussed and the subject of major news coverage. SSV has played an outsized role in helping bring these issues forward and advancing these conversations.

I want to thank the entire SSV community for your partnership and support. I’ve truly appreciated the chance to work with a wide variety of organizations, from government agencies to start-ups to community-based nonprofits, on the most important issues of our time. I wish you all the best as you continue this good work.
