I recently heard of a small Syrian community outside Damascus that stopped violence with a simple construction project.

Neighbors would gather around a shop window every day to buy bread. Unsurprisingly, a line often formed, and, as happens waiting in the hot sun, impatience led to frustration.

Before long, fights started breaking out whenever the bread line got too long.

But people didn’t just ACCEPT this violence as a normal cost of getting their daily groceries.

Instead, they decided to address it.

They identified the root cause—long, crowded, sweaty waits in the sun—and came up with a solution: they built a second window.

Would you believe it put a stop to the fighting immediately? It didn’t require negotiation, or trauma, or fighting violence with more violence.

All it took was for a few peeps to decide that the violence they were experiencing was unreasonable, and try something different.

Sometimes, interrupting violence can be easier than you think. And like this Syrian community, it’s not a solo sport. You don’t have to do it alone.
