Chinese EV manufacturer XPENG will use Volkswagen Group's Modular Electric Drive Platform (MEB) to develop at least two new BEV models for the China market.

Takeaways: Mahindra Group and Ford Motor Company are already using the MEB platform for BEV models in India and Europe. Volkswagen claims customers using its MEB platform can save 50% of production costs compared with buying assembling the components in house. During the first innings of the EV transition, OEMs should be licensing commoditized drivetrain technology and E/E architecture in order to shorten time to market and lower production costs. EV customers will be won in the cockpit, not on the drivetrain, and thats where OEMs should focus R&D dollars.

Tata Motors has one of the highest R&D to revenue ratios of global automotive OEMs.

The company accelerated its R&D spending in 2024, with total outlays of Rs. 29,398 crore (~$3.5B USD), more than 45% above 2023 levels. By upping its R&D spend, Tata hopes to future proof its ecosystem; here are three key development areas the company has identified.

🔋 EVs: Tata controls a whopping 72% of the Indian PV EV market as of 2024. However, insufficient charging infrastructure and new market entrants enticed by generous government schemes will threaten Tata’s pole position over the coming years. Developing new EV platforms across the Tata and JLR brands, as well a robust charging ecosystem will be expensive but are key to Tata owning the Indian EV market. Tata said it will roll out an additional 22,000 charging locations in the next 18-months.

🚛 Commercial Vehicles: Tata has invested heavily into hydrogen fuel cells as a alternative drivetrain technology in the commercial vehicle sector. This includes hydrogen engines as well as fueling infrastructure. This will compliment Tata's growing diesel portfolio. Tata also plans to spin-off its consumer and passenger vehicle business into independent companies so they can pursue technology most relevant to their market segments.

👨‍💻 Software: The era of software defined vehicles is forcing manufacturers to develop new digital ecosystems around their cars. From mobile apps to advanced driving assistance; Tata is investing heavily to develop connected systems for its entire vehicle portfolio. Earlier this year, Tata Motors sisters company, Tata Technologies, announced that it would partner with BMW Group to help the german automaker develop advanced digital ecosystems and driver assistance software for its new cars. It will be interesting to see how Tata can leverage automotive IP across its portfolio of companies.

Takeaways: Clean drive train technology and software will receive the lions share of the R&D dollars; these technologies are key to the company's goal to launch 10 new EV models by 2026. As competition heats up in the Indian EV market with releases from players like MG, BYD, and VINFAST , Tata needs to spend big to stand out. The company's R&D strategy from previous years is already bearing fruit, in FY2024 Tata Motors received its highest ever grant of 333 patents.

There is a great chart from Chengyao Cai with a 2X2 analysis of selected global auto OEMs and Tier-1 suppliers and R&D spend that can be viewed here: https://lnkd.in/gdBWMgQS

If Tata Motors was on this chart, it would be in good company with other "aggressive innovators".
