95% of New Products Fail
Over 30,000 new products hit the market annually, yet 95% fail*.
Why? The reasons are numerous: . Difficulty finding a niche in saturated markets . Lack of innovation or distinctiveness . Poor advertising or promotion . Association with scandals or quality issues . Failing to solve real problems
But there's a scientific approach to product development. Let me share some key milestones and personal experiences as a product designer.
⌚ P1: Companies systematically searching for new product ideas outperform those that don't. At Apple, the Watch health ring design team spent a year iterating ideas on a massive wall. After exploring countless solutions, they discovered their first sketch was the best. It took a year to figure that out.
📱 P2: Upper management involvement in assessing new product ideas contributes positively to success. Ken Kocienda's book 'Creative Selection' details this process, including his 3-minute pitch of the touch keyboard to Steve Jobs. A must-read for product people.
🎬 P3: Interdisciplinary team assessment of new product ideas boosts success. This is underrated. Bringing designers, developers, data scientists, etc., to the table has proven successful for global teams. I've written about this, and it resonated with many.
🏉 P4: Successful companies engage customers more frequently to develop and evaluate new product ideas. Methods include direct contact, customer complaints, surveys, market research, and competitor analysis. Direct customer contact is the most valuable source of market information.
🗣 P5: Systematically integrating customer requirements into new product concepts drives success. At Apple, we used an internal tool to gather developer requirements. It was invaluable for internal teams to identify and fix issues quickly.
🎛 P6: Companies systematically translating customer needs into tech specs win big. Today's toolkit for this is vast - from digital prototypes to physical MVPs. These early models do double duty: proving technical feasibility and supercharging communication. They're not just for the dev team; they're conversation starters with customers and eye-openers for top brass.
📆 P7: Companies that systematically plan projects before starting are more successful in innovation. At Incal AI, we use Linear app to manage projects, linking initiatives, documentation, and tasks. It integrates with Figma and Github, providing a comprehensive overview. (Not sponsored, we just love it!)
