Highlights
We are 32 days out from the Flatwater -“Dam That Cancer”, event where I and 200 other paddlers stand-up paddle the entire length of Lake Austin(21 miles in total). A major part of my “why I paddle” is family. My connection to the cause began with my mother's diagnosis and has extended now to the rest of my family. My mother, brother(s), wife, sister in law have all taken part in the event and helped raise millions of dollars for families impacted by a cancer diagnosis. I wanted to share the spotlight they did this week on my new favorite paddler - Peyton Eitel. Peyton has paddled along with me even as a child, riding along on my board for the last mile. He now enters his third year, paddling the entire distance on his own. Below is his story, along with his motivation.
“Growing up around the Flatwater Foundation, I was fortunate enough to learn about the cause by cheering on my family - my mother, father, grandmother, aunt, and uncles—who have all been participants over the years. My dad would even let me ride with him on his board for the last mile, which allowed me to meet this amazing community of paddlers. I knew I wanted to participate in Dam That Cancer from an early age. In 2022, when I turned 14, I finally got the chance. Paddling the entire distance for the first time was incredibly challenging, but it was also motivating knowing I was helping others and contributing to such an important cause. I look forward to this paddle all year long.”

This is a super proud Dad moment. My son Peyton Eitel was just recognized on our local news channel for the work he is doing on “The Naloxone Project.” With the global Fentanyl crisis and the stratospheric rise in deaths and overdoses, he decided to launch a program aimed at providing education and access to Narcan in local high schools and to the Austin homeless population.
