Highlights
I’d like to wish my very first boss, my Dad, a very Happy Father’s Day. When others went off to summer camp, a job elsewhere, or other summer pursuits, my dad elected to let me work for him as an office assistant while I was in middle school and he was a school principal. I sat outside his office and stuffed envelopes, ran errands, prepped correspondence and did whatever I could to help the admin team or others. I learned to look for efficiencies, to not wait to be asked when something needed to be done, and to say “Mr. Goodloe” and not “Dad” when I summoned him over the intercom. I took the job seriously and when one day I didn’t, he fired me… for a day. It’s a lesson I didn’t need him to repeat.
I saw excellence in action as I worked alongside Dad, ahem... Mr. Goodloe. 😊 I wish I could say that my quotes before each meeting were original, they are not. I got that and so much more from him. I saw firsthand the value of treating colleagues with kindness, and the strength required to stand calm and strong in times of stress. Most importantly, I witnessed a man who rose first thing in the morning, said a prayer with his family and then set about his routine like clockwork so that his mind, body, and spirit were prepared when he stepped into the building.
I am forever grateful for those summers we commuted each day together and ate nearly every workday meal together. I’ve reported to many people during my career but none holds a candle to my first boss, my Dad.
This picture is from a work trip that I took to London in 2012. I finally got a chance to bring him to work with me.
I’m happy to share that I’ve obtained a new certification: MIT Sloan Advanced Certificate for Executives in Management, Innovation, and Technology from MIT Sloan Executive Education!
