4040 4.0
Exciting changes are afoot after running my agency for over 23 years. There have been some very distinct and defining periods that led to our newest chapter. The first era of 4040Agency was the fun, exciting, start-up times establishing ourselves as a pre-eminent branding agency for sports properties & consumer products companies. My original partner and I built a full-service agency with “fancy” offices, and amazing employees, and we traveled around the country for every client and pitch meeting. This was ‘4040 1.0’. These were exciting times.
Then came the real estate bust. Downsizing was the means to stability. We retained our best clients (thank you Washington Nationals and NASCAR) and carefully put one foot in front of another. This was ‘4040 2.0’. These were nervous times. Next came the agency world evolution. Large clients lessened retainer-based contracts for project-based work and even developed in-house agencies. I had to make a quick pivot. With very senior people and a team of contract designers, we continued our excellent branding work. From Berkeley to Sausalito, CA we grew the business with great clients like our friends at the San Diego Symphony and the Washington Capitals This was ‘4040 3.0’. These were stable times.
So what’s next for our agency? As the founder, I will always be committed to being a Creative Leader in our industry providing incremental value for our clients, but now I’ve recognized that I can do much more. I am committed to changing what a branding agency looks like. Fact: Less than 5% of professional designers identify as Black. That number is too small. More broadly there are too few executive leaders in the agency space who are women or women of color. They should not all look like me. The new 4040 is committed to creating opportunities where women and people of color know they belong. Our branding solutions will better reflect our clients' customers and the world in which we live. This is why I am handing over the CEO reins to a seasoned black female executive.
Michelle Bowler is 4040’s new CEO and Co-Owner and our new VP of Client Services and Marketing is Lauren Phalen.
Lauren is one of the smartest, savviest strategists that I’ve met. I’m psyched to have Lauren on board and our clients will love her.
As for Michelle Bowler, the inspiration behind this overall agency change came from our conversations. As co-owners, Michelle and I will take 4040Agency to the next level running the agency from Cambridge, MA. Michelle has equally matched and complementary experience as a strategic growth and operations executive with 25+ years of experience leading big teams while building big brands. Michelle is a force and lightens up every room she’s in. To that point, I was smart enough to marry her. As a husband and wife team, we are going to build an agency that makes a meaningful difference with employees and clients alike. I can’t wait to share our progress.
