"In my view, equity is a prerequisite to meritocracy. How can we possibly hope to have a meritocratic society or meritocratic organizations if we’re not judging people by the same standards?"

There's been a lot of noise in the news cycle lately around the evils of DEI, in particular the concept of equity. DEI has been weaponized and thus misconstrued to mean something completely different than intended.

Some have argued that meritocracy is the more fair counterpoint to equity, but in reality, both concepts are two sides of the same coin.

Check out this post from Joelle Emerson to see why equity really isn't as controversial a concept as the Musks of the world might make it out to be.

Unfortunately for the anti-DEI activists, this is a way less clickbaity definition of equity.

I'm thrilled to share that I've joined Paradigm as SVP of Marketing!

Paradigm is the leading DEI startup building technology to radically transform organizations and build a world that is just, equitable, and inclusive.

When Joelle Emerson first reached out to me about this role, I wasn't looking for a change, but I was instantly hooked by the mission.

Here's why I ultimately joined:

Brand. Paradigm has been a leader in the DEI space for over a decade and has a customer list that would be the envy of any startup. Our leaders are all incredibly smart and accomplished and are regularly featured thought leaders in tier 1 publications. Every HR leader I spoke to knows the brand and has positive things to say.

People. Everyone says their colleagues are awesome when they join a new company. But what I love about everyone I've met at Paradigm is that we seek to hold the radical middle in how we approach work. We aim to be high-performance and empathetic, experts and humble learners, tech-first and human-centric, justice-oriented and business-minded, profit-driven and people-first.   Growth. Paradigm is bootstrapped and has a track record of consistent, efficient revenue growth. In a time where every startup is moving from a growth-at-all-costs mentality to a long-term, sustainable growth mentality, Paradigm has been leading the way for a decade. That said our vision and ambitions are no less giant. We just have an efficient, people-first roadmap to get there.

Technology. Paradigm's approach to technology is human-centric. We aim to build solutions that increase the reach of and access to DEI services, training, strategy, surveys, analysis, affinity groups, etc. These are human-centric activities that demand people-first solutions. We're not replacing the human experience with AI, but leveraging technology to foster connection, belonging, and flourishing.

As I was considering this opportunity, I did an informal poll on DEI sentiment among my peers in the tech space. 75% told me that DEI was dying. Some even expressed that CEOs are glad they don’t need to worry about this issue anymore, so they can just focus on growing revenue.

After listening to a few sales calls this week, I can confidently say this viewpoint is incredibly short-sighted. The pain is still there. The hunger for DEI technology and services has not waned. This is an almost $10B market with the dominant position still vacant. The opportunities are endless.

It's no secret that the tech job market is struggling. But as the job market recovers, it will be the companies that have used this season to invest in their DEI initiatives that will come out on top.

They will attract the best talent. They will be the best places to work. And they will build the diverse teams necessary to creatively solve the most challenging problems. And they will ultimately win.

Why? Because Millennials and Gen Z care, and they’ll show they care by the companies they choose to work for.

Let's go.
