For as long as I can remember...I have been obsessed about Microsoft Excel and I've been on a never-ending pursuit of consuming as much material as I can on the topic.
There are so many amazing resources out there, and one of the creators who stands out the most to me in my journey has been Mynda Treacy
I first started following along with Mynda's youtube channel a few years ago as I was working on trying to get my promotion...little did I know I'd eventually be running my own fractional CFO firm, and sharing my own content to an audience of over 400k.
The craziest part is that I was one day stuck on a problem, and as such I left a comment on Mynda's video. With over 650k subscribers on Mynda's youtube channel, I didn't expect much to happen...
Which is why I was shocked when hours later Mynda responded to my comment with exactly what I was looking for.
Since then I've been grateful to get to know Mynda and trade Excel secrets - there are few people who I've come across who know as much about Excel as Mynda does!
If you aren't already following along, I suggest you do over here: Follow Mynda on LinkedIn: https://bit.ly/mynda24ln And check out her YouTube channel here: https://bit.ly/mynda24yt
Here’s how to design a STUNNING dashboard
If you’ve been following my content…you’ve probably picked up the fact that I’m obsessed with dashboards.
I have every department head in our company send a daily dashboard on what’s happening…
I have an excel plugin that gives you access to dozens of dashboards…
I have tons of videos on how to create beautiful dashboards in Excel…
I even have an album on my phone with my favorite dashboard 😂
Here’s how I approach the DESIGN component when building a dashboard
1️⃣ INITIAL DATA
This is where you’ll start out and it’s common for data exports to be unformatted / in CSV format.
The key is to keep your source data totally unedited so that your edited dashboard will pull from this data source…
and you can refresh easily.
2️⃣ FORMAT FOR SPACING + NUMBER FORMATTING
Now comes the time to make your data come to life.
Duplicate your excel tab, and link all the cells to your data export.
Then add relevant spacing, and number formatting.
I like to use custom formatting with the formatting of “#,###;(#,###);- “ for numbers
3️⃣ ADD COLOR SCHEME + BORDERS
OK here is where the biggest transformation will take place…adding in our color scheme.
Just like certain foods TASTE good together…and certain musical notes SOUND good together…well certain colors LOOK good together
Pick your brands colors and keep your dashboard relevant to those colors.
I also like to add borders with a subtle grey outline instead of the default black
4️⃣ ADD CHARTS
Charts are a great way to add quicker & greater comprehension to your data set.
Each chart tells you something new (new YT video coming up on this!)
Donut charts are my favorite when it comes to budget vs actuals.
5️⃣ ADD TITLE & FOOTER
OK, final steps - let’s give it a nice title an footer.
This will make your dashboard ready to be imported into a slide deck so that you can impress your audience

Way to go - you just designed a world class dashboard 🤩
