Cultural & Brand Semiotician

Joshua Glenn is a pioneering commercial semiotician with 25 years of experience, who provides insights to brands and companies.2 He is the co-founder and principal at SEMIOVOX, a semiotics-fueled consultancy.12 Joshua has a background in journalism and was an editor and columnist at The Boston Globe in the 2000s. In the 90s, he published the zine/journal Hermenaut.1

Glenn has worked in commercial semiotics for over 20 years, offering crucial insights for strategists, planners, and marketers.1 The New York Times described him as a semiotician and writer who has spent decades thinking about how a product or idea means, not what, but how.1

At Semiovox, Joshua's work includes analyzing unspoken local and global codes that shape perceptions and guide behavior within product categories and sociocultural territories.3 He has worked on projects analyzing the codes of the Cola category in global markets and multisensorial experiences in multiple markets, including China, India, and Mexico.3

Before co-founding Semiovox in 2014 with Ron Rentel, Joshua worked as a freelance semiotician for 15 years at KING MIXER, consulting for over 100 brands via European and North American marketing agencies.2 He also co-created the Significant Objects project with Rob Walker, exploring the meaning of objects to humans.2

Joshua is also the editor of RADIUM AGE, a sci-fi book series from The MIT Press, and publisher of the websites HILOBROW and SEMIOVOX.2 He is the author and editor of over a dozen books, including "More Voices from the Radium Age" (2023), "Lost Objects" (2022), and "The Adventurer's Glossary" (2021).2
